Try to convince production to get faster drives. Having said all of that, those bus powered WD drives are a huge problem and generally an unnecessary bottleneck - you need to have drives that can write data at least as fast as the cards can offload footage otherwise you’re just spending a ton of extra time on set (and not just you - any other crew or production people that have to wait around for you). My bet is on the hub - but those bus powered drives bad news and are notorious for slowing down if they aren’t getting enough power, and surprise surprise macbooks are notorious for not supplying enough power over USB. You need to just break it all down to the individual possible bottlenecks one at a time and figure out which one is causing the slow down. ![]() ![]() It sounds as though something in in the data chain is causing the port being used by either the card reader or the backup drive to slow down to USB 2 speeds. Test all of your cables individually, take the hub out of the equation and make sure that you aren’t over-saturating the USB bus. ![]() 10MB/s is nuts so it’s time to start replacing components in the chain.
